International Court of Justice (ICJ)
Distinguished Advocates of the International Court of Justice,
So much lies ahead of us. My name is Laith Nahhas, a rising senior at the National Orthodox School, and I have the privilege of serving as your President. I am honored to be joined by an exceptional chairing panel: Deputy President Naya Karadsheh, and Chairs Basel Hajqasem and Abdullah Taweel.
This committee will take on two cases from International Law: Iraq v. United States of America, Alleged Violations of the Prohibition of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment, and Guyana v. Venezuela, Arbitral Award of 3 October 1899. While these subjects speak to the complexity of global justice, what truly distinguishes the ICJ is its commitment to interpreting law with fairness, clarity, and reason. This is not a courtroom for speculation; it is a forum for truth and principle-based arguments. Whichever side you represent, you will be called upon to defend weighty words with preparation, precision, and purpose.
As we revisit these cases, the theme of this year’s AQMUN 2025 conference offers us a guiding light: Empowering the Excluded. The ICJ stands as a stage where justice is delivered to those unheard, and with every strike of the gavel, we are reminded that international law, when enforced, is the great equalizer.
With determination and anticipation,
Laith Nahhas
