The International Criminal Court (ICC)
Esteemed Advocates,
“With great power comes great responsibility.” Welcome to the International Criminal Court (ICC)! My name is Talal Alasad, and I am a rising senior at The International Academy – Amman.
This will be my sixteenth Model United Nations experience, and I am confident we will share a truly memorable journey together, alongside my respected Deputy President, Jana Halaweh, and our honorable Chair, Faris Saadeldeen.
The ICC is a complex committee that operates under the Rome Statute, the treaty that establishes its jurisdiction to try individuals for the four most serious crimes: genocide, crimes against humanity, war crimes, and the crime of aggression. During our sessions, we will prosecute two defendants: Rodrigo Duterte and David Sanakoev. These cases are both intricate and significant, reflecting the theme of AQMUN 2025, Empowering the Excluded. However, this committee goes beyond a traditional courtroom mentality. It is not about simply declaring guilt or innocence from the outset. In the ICC, strategy matters, and every move you make will determine the verdict.
Your role is to uphold justice under the Rome Statute and ensure that fairness prevails. Whether you are part of the Prosecution, the Defense, or the Jury, your voice will carry weight in every case. Remember, you were placed in this committee for a reason: to bring meaningful change to the outcomes of these proceedings. I trust that together, we will ensure that truth prevails, the innocent walk free, and the guilty are held accountable.
May the verdict be in your favor, advocates.
Sincerely,
Talal Alasad
